چکیده

Long-term hydrographic temperature and salinity transect data in the East China Sea from June 1955 to November 2001 are analyzed in order to examine the geostrophic velocity and the structure of the Kuroshio current. The structure of the Kuroshio Current is divided into three basic forms, a single-core structure, a double-core structure and a multi-core structure; the appearance percentage of the three forms are 53.1%, 31.4%, and 15.4%, respectively. The analysis suggests that multi-core structures have significant seasonal and interannual variabilities that are not fully understood but may relate to variations in transport and associated flow instabilities. The Kuroshio's spatial character is also analyzed in detail by applying a simplified model of motion instability into this multi-core structure of the East China Sea Kuroshio. The theoretical results are found to be consistent with the observations, suggesting that the instability of the Kuroshio in the East China Sea may bring forth the formation of the observed multi-core structure.

The Kuroshio nutrient stream and its temporal variation in the East China Sea

[1] Using in situ data from 88 cruises from 1987 to 2009 in the East China Sea, downstream nutrient flux (the product of velocity and nutrient concentration) and nutrient transport (integration of flux over a section) by Kuroshio were examined. The presence of a maximum nutrient flux core in the middle layer was confirmed. Seasonal variation in the nutrient flux was not significant and was much...

Structure and Variability of the Kuroshio Current in Tokara Strait

Four years of mooring array measurements in Tokara Strait, south of Kyushu, Japan, from 1992 to 1996 are used to analyze the structure and temporal variability of the Kuroshio Current. The mean Kuroshio current in Tokara Strait shows a nearly permanent subsurface double-core structure, possibly due to topographic blockage effects. The dominant variations of the Kuroshio in Tokara Strait are sep...

Spatial variations in the Kuroshio nutrient transport from the East China Sea to south of Japan

Based on absolute geostrophic velocity, which was calculated using repeated hydrographic data of 39 cruises from 2000 to 2009 and nitrate concentrations measured in the same areas from 1964 to 2009, we obtained the temporally averaged nitrate flux (the product of velocity and nitrate concentration) and nitrate transport (integration of flux over one section) of four sections across the Kuroshio...

Observations of Kuroshio flow variations in the East China Sea

[1] Kuroshio velocity structure and transport in the East China Sea (ECS) were investigated as part of a 23-month study using inverted echo sounders and acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) along the regularly sampled PN-line. Flow toward the northeast is concentrated near the continental shelf with the mean surface velocity maximum located 30 km offshore from the shelf break (taken as th...

Biogeographical role of the Kuroshio Current in the amphibious mudskipper Periophthalmus modestus indicated by mitochondrial DNA data

Quaternary climatic cycles have influenced marine organisms' spatial distribution and population dynamics. This study aimed to elucidate the evolutionary influences of contemporary and glacial physical barriers on the population structure, demography and colonization history of the mudskipper (Periophthalmus modestus) based on a mitochondrial gene segment (ND5) from 131 individual fish sampled ...
